Bangladesh News Desk: The first group consisting of 100-member contingent of Bangladesh Navy left Dhaka on Tuesday to join Bangladesh Force Marine Unit-8 (BANFMU-8) deployed in United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Commander Atiqur Rahman Bhuiyan, Deputy Director of Overseas Naval Operations, bid them farewell at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Currently, 200 naval personnel have been deployed as Force Marine Unit under UN Mission in South Sudan.
Besides, on October 25, 100-member of the second group are expected to leave Dhaka to join BANFMU-8. The contingent will replace BANFMU-7 in South Sudan.
According to the instructions of the United Nations, the Bangladesh Navy’s Force Marine Unit is working in the remote areas of South Sudan to ensure the safe movement of barges carrying essential fuel, food, medicine and humanitarian aid, to monitor and control maritime piracy, to provide assistance to local people in fire-fighting, divers are working to provide rescue and emergency medical care to injured military and civilian personnel.
Mentionable that Bangladesh Navy has been participating and fulfilling its responsibilities in international peacekeeping operations for more than two decades in the field of peace and protection of human rights in various war-torn regions of the world.
Members of the BANFMU contingent deployed in South Sudan have successfully completed a total of 54 ‘Operation Life Line’ missions along the 938 km long river course of the Nile.
In addition, the BANFMU engaged in establishing world peace in South Sudan since 2015 till now 1,400 marines have performed their assigned duties with great sincerity, dedication and efficiency.
