UNB: The Russian House in Dhaka hosted a program marking the 91st anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore’s trip to Russia on Wednesday.
In his welcoming speech, the Director of the Russian House in Dhaka Maxim Dobrokhotov shared that Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to the USSR became possible with the efforts of the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Abroad (AUSCR). Rossotrudnichestvo is its legal successor. He added that the impressions of his stay in Soviet Russia were described in ‘Letters from Russia’.
The Director also cited the first Soviet Commissar (Minister) of Education AV Lunacharsky compared Tagore with LN Tolstoy.
The prime speakers were the Professor of the Chittagong University Dr Maniruzzaman and the Chairman of Liberation War Academy Trust Dr Abul Azad. Quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Letters from Russia’, they said Tagore had travelled so many countries of the world, but his visit to Russia was particularly significant to him. He was known to the Soviet people as a great writer, a tireless fighter against colonial oppression and war, and an ardent advocate of national unity and peace. And his visit has become the forerunner of future friendly relations between Russia and Bangladesh.
The programme was followed by cultural performances related to the literary works of Tagore and an exhibition of some documentary photographs during his journey in Russia.
