Dhaka Tribune: Acting powerhouses Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand are playing leads in Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” the Oscar winner’s new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”
A24, the studio behind Moonlight, Lady Bird, Ex Machina, Hereditary, Minari, Uncut Gems and others, is set to release the film in theatres on December 25.
This is one of the rare instances where Joel Coen is directing a film without brother, Ethan Coen – regarded as one of the greatest living directing duos today. They won the Oscar for Best Director for their 2007 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “No Country for Old Men..”
McDormand bagged the Best Actress award for “Nomadland” last year where she played a modern day nomad, grieving the loss of her husband and navigating the American landscape. Denzel Washington was last seen on the big screen in the 2017 legal drama film “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
The supporting cast for “The Tragedy of Macbeth” includes Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, Brendan Gleeson, Harry Melling, and Ralph Ineson, among others.
“I think a very important thing about Joel’s adaptation is that we are not calling it ‘Macbeth,’” McDormand said. “We’re calling it ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth,’ which I think is an important distinction. In Joel’s adaptation, we are exploring the age of the characters and in our adaptation the Macbeths are older. Both Denzel and I are older than what is often cast as the Macbeths. We’re postmenopausal, we’re past childbearing age. So that puts a pressure on their ambition to have the crown. I think the most important distinction is that it is their last chance for glory.”
The film will be available on Apple TV+ from January 14, 2022. It will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 24.
