BSS, Chattogram: Wicket-keeper batter Nurul Hasan stepped in as concussion sub for Yasir Ali, who was struck on his helmet by a shot pitched delivery of Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi on the fourth day morning session of the first cricket Test.
The incident happened in the 30th over of Bangladesh’s second innings when Yasir tried to duck but it pinged on his helmet. Yasir, who was on 34, batted one more over and scored two runs before deciding to leave the ground finally on 36. Since he substituted a batter, Sohan can only bat in this Test as per the concussion rule.
Debutant Yasir was batting nicely after Bangladesh were left in precarious position, losing experienced Mushfiqur Rahim in the first over of the fourth day. That made Bangladesh five down for 43 and with lead of just 87 runs. However Yasir and Liton played with caution to bring Bangladesh into the contest.
Yasir who made 4 runs in the first innings particularly was impressive as he took the fast bowlers confidently and used his feet nicely against the spinners. He struck six fours in his 36 for which he played 72 balls.
“Yasir will be taken to hospital for a scan to determine the extent of his injury. Nurul Hasan Sohan will step in as Yasir’s concussion sub in the match,” Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon told the media. Bangladesh were bowled out for 330 in their first innings before gaining 44-run lead by wrapping up Pakistan for 286. Yasir was the third Bangladesh batter to be substituted in the Test cricket.
Earlier Liton Das and Nayeem left the ground after being struck on their helmet in Bangladesh’s only pink ball Test against India in November, 2019. Both of the players were hit by India fast bowler Mohammad Shami.
They were replaced by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam in that Test. In ODI, Taskin Ahmed is the Bangladesh’s only concussion sub when he stepped in for Mohammad Saifuddin, who was hit by a Dushmantha Chamira delivery in Bangladesh’s second of three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home in last May.
