UNB: On December 8, 1971, Pirojpur, Brahmanbaria and Moulvibazar were liberated from the oppressive Pakistan army.
Bangladesh’s flag was raised at every house and joy filled the air.
The Pirojpur District Administration has organized several activities to recall the day, including placing wreaths at the ‘Shaheed Bedi’ at Bhagirathi Chattar, and processions.
Pirojpur was the Ninth Sector during the Liberation War under the command of Sub sector commander Major (Retd) Ziauddin Ahmed.
The Pakistani army first entered Pirojpur through Hularhat on May 4, 1971.
Over a period of eight months, in cooperation with local razakars, the Pakistani army indulged in heavy plunder in different villages, including Machimpur and Krishna Nagar. A number of shops and houses in these villages were also set ablaze.
On December 7, along with a team of Mukti Bahini (freedom fighters), Major Ziauddin entered Pirojpur city at 10pm to take control. On learning about their mission, the Pakistani army fled from the location through Kocha Nodi.
