A group of Bangladeshi scientists on Wednesday claimed that they have detected a new cause for diabetes, which according to them would contribute significantly to the prevention of the disease.
The researchers disclosed this at a press conference at the BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka.
The scientists said lack of intestinal alkaline phosphatase or IAP in human bodies may cause diabetes.
Madhu S Malo, who led the research, told the reporters during the press conference that they have come to know about the IAP after conducting a research on 574 people aged between 30 and 60 years for the last five years.
The outcome of the research work has already been published in the British Medical Journal, he said.
While addressing the press conference, AK Azad Khan, president of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, said the people who are with low IAP have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
“This is a groundbreaking discovery and it hints that Bangladeshi scientists are capable of doing a big deal of work,” he said.
