BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has held the alleged government manipulation solely responsible for price spiral of all food products in the country.
“Earning illegal profit from everything is the main problem of the ruling quarter and they are now making extra profit through manipulations,” Fakhrul brought the allegation on Thursday afternoon in the city.
He was talking to reporters after visiting some injured leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) undergoing treatment at a hospital in Basabo area in Dhaka, this afternoon.
The JCD leaders sustained injuries during sporadic clashes with Bangladesh Chhatra League activists that took place on Dhaka University Campus recently.
Fakhrul accused the ruling party men of taking all food products in their grips and said it is their habit and they did the same in 1974 that had pushed the country towards a famine.
There was no food scarcity in the country at that time, rather there was corruption and misdeeds everywhere, the BNP leader said.
What will the poor do now as the prices of rice, milk, bread and other food items are going up rapidly? Many day-labourers and rickshaw pullers pass their days taking bread and banana but the prices have tripled now, how will they survive, he said.
The poor people have been given rice at Tk 10 per kg but the government also increased the price of the discounted rice to Tk 15, he said.
