Entertainment News Desk: Renowned composer and seven-time National Film Award-winning music director Alam Khan died at a hospital in the capital on Friday morning. The 78-year-old music director breathed his last at 11:32am while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Alam Khan’s son music director Arman Khan confirmed the news to media. Arman said he was suffering from old-age complications for long.
Alam Khan’s musical talents began to show at the age of 10, when he put music to a song titled “Niribil Sondhaye Dekha Hole Dujonaye”, written by his friend Maksudur Rahman, and sang it. The song however was never released. His first released song was “O Madhobi Go Theko Mo’r Ontore”, which was sung by Rawshan Ara Mustafiz gained popularity after being broadcast on television in pre-independence Bangladesh. He began his career by assisting composers like Robin Ghosh, Altaf Mahmud and Satya Shaha, and his first solo work was in the 1970 film “KaNch Kata Heere”.
The song “O Re Neel Doriya” (from “Sareng Bou”) brought him to spotlight, and he went on to win National Film Awards for films like “Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo”, “Teen Konya”, “Surrender”, “Dinkal”, “Bagher Thaba”, “Ebadot” and “Ki Jadu Korila”. It was through him that Ferdous Wahid, Andrew Kishore and Sheikh Ishtiaq debuted in playback. His most recent music direction was for the 2011 film “Ke Apon Ke Por”.
Eminent Bangladeshi actress Sharmili Ahmed passed away at the age of 75 on Friday. She breathed her last at a private hospital in the capital this morning.
Obhinoy Shilpi Sangha president and renowned actor Ahsan Habib Nasim confirmed the news.
Born in 1947 in Belur Chok village of Murshidabad, Sharmili started her career on radio in 1962 before making a foray into films 1964, and television four years later.
Sharmili started her acting career through Urdu films and acted in four Urdu films — Jugnu, Ujala, Panchi Baura and Thikana. Her first Bengali film was Abirbhab, directed by Subhash Dutta. Sharmili Ahmed worked in over 150 films including ‘Malancha’, ‘Dompoti’, ‘Agun’, ‘Abirvaab’, ‘Poush Phaguner Pala’, ‘Meherjaan’, ‘Abar Hawa Bodol’, ‘Brishtir Pore’, ‘Amader Ananda Bari’, ‘Anchol’, ‘Aguntuk’, ‘Poshak’, ‘Chheleti’, ‘Uposhonghar’, ‘Chena Manusher Panchalee’, and ‘Dhupchhay’.
She has shared the screen with eminent actors like Razzak, Ujjal, Azim, Bulbul Ahmed and others. Sharmili Ahmed has acted in diverse characters. She has been seen in screen as a mother, sister-in-law, a beloved wife, a supportive sister etc.
Alongside films, Sharmili Ahmed was regular in television dramas as well. She worked in over three hundred teleplays like Aachol, Bhalobashi Tomakei, Nibedita, Shara Bela, Bohurupi Bhalobasha and Rupa. She has hosted a television programme titled ‘Amar Ma Amar Prithibi’ based on world mothers’ day, which was aired in Ekushey Television. In her long acting career, both in film and drama, Sharmili Ahmed received a number of prestigious awards. In 1985 she was honoured with Bachsas award for her acting talent in the movie Dohon. She also won Ritwik Ghatak Golden Award, Anannya Award, Alokito Nari Award, Syed Mahidul Islam Memorial Award and others. She will be cherished and remembered for her remarkable contribution to Bangladesh’s cultural arena for over five decades.
