‘Trafficking in Persons Report 2022’ is set to be released next week
Bangladesh News Desk: Bangladesh has been moving in the right direction to prevent human trafficking for the past five years, say officials at the Embassy of the United States of America in Bangladesh.
A US embassy official was talking to journalists in a press briefing arranged ahead of the official release of the “Trafficking in Person (TIP) Report 2022” report at the American Center in Dhaka on Thursday.
The report is set to be released next week.
The official said the report is not intended to condemn countries, but to partner with them to help eliminate trafficking.
“The United States believes the fight against human trafficking is vitally important. Human trafficking is a crime that exists around the world, including in the United States. It poses a grave danger to an individual’s well-being, public health, public safety, national security, economic development, and prosperity,” the official said.
Around 25 million people are subjected to human trafficking around the world.
The TIP report looks at the government’s work on preventing trafficking and ranks countries in three tiers.
Countries assessed as fully meeting the TVPA’s minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking are placed on Tier 1.
Countries assessed as not fully meeting the minimum standards, but making significant efforts to meet them, are placed on Tier 2.
Countries assessed as not fully meeting the minimum standards and not making significant efforts to do so are ranked Tier 3.
In 2020, Bangladesh graduated to tier 2 from tier 3.
Asked if the trafficked Rohingya community would be counted as Bangladeshi, the official said there were no numbers in the report, which would talk about actions, recommendations, and scope.
The official added that Bangladesh would be able to make action plans based on previous TIP report recommendations, as the country did not have one at the moment.
“We are trying to have a framework for police and prosecutors so that they can work together,” the official said.
