Entertainment Reporter: Dear Mother (Kiori Pekra Uo), Bangladesh’s inaugural film in the Mro language, is set to be screened at the prestigious University of Cambridge at 2:30pm Thursday local time.
Organised by the Indigenous Studies Group Cambridge, this marks another milestone for the 67-minute feature, directed by SK Shuvo Sadik and released in 2023.
Shot in a remote Mro village in Bandarban, Dear Mother—written by Syed Shahzada Al Karim, with cinematography by Hasnat Sohan, art direction by Nishat Rafa, and executive production by Mashiur Rahman—brings the community’s real-life stories to the screen.
The villagers, beyond acting, emerge as storytellers, lending authenticity to the narrative.
The film has already captivated audiences at home, screening at various Bangladeshi universities, and abroad at institutions like the University of British Columbia in Canada and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Its upcoming presentation at Cambridge adds to its growing international acclaim.
Director SK Shuvo Sadik highlighted its significance: “Given its anthropological and artistic value, the International Center for Social Science in Amsterdam has archived Dear Mother as a vital resource for future researchers and film enthusiasts.”
He noted its enduring relevance for studies in indigenous culture, cinematic resistance, and alternative storytelling.
