Thousands of flood-hit people saw no respite from their sufferings as the overall flood situation remained nearly unchanged across the country on Friday.
A large number of people were left marooned in 21 flood-affected districts with thousands of houses inundated.
Besides, seven people died from causes related to flood in the last 24 hours till Friday noon, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
In Kurigram, one of the worst affected districts, over 3.5 lakh people are still stuck in floodwater in nine upazilas as Brahmaputra, Dharla and some other rivers kept swelling for the last few days.
The Dharla was flowing 83cm above the danger level at bridge point on Friday morning while the Brahmaputra 74cm above at Chilmari and 62cm above at Nunkhawa points.
On the other hand, the Teesta River witnessed a significant fall in water level, creating a fresh fear of massive erosion along the riverbanks.
Vast swathes of land in Rajarhat and Ulipur upazilas now stand threatened by erosion.
Although the Water Development Board placed a good number of sandbags along vulnerable banks, the effort turned out to be inadequate as some areas already went into the gorge of the river.
The people of the locality are now passing their days amid severe scarcity of drinking water and food in addition to lack of other assistance. A total of 20 people, including 15 children, have so far died in the district during the flood, either from snakebite or by drowning.
In Faridpur, the Padma River started swelling again leaving 541 villages in seven upazilas inundated and over 1.5 lakh people marooned.
The Padma was flowing 105cm above the danger level on Friday morning.
Thousands of people along with their cattle moved to the 11 shelters set up by authorities while some others took shelter on high roads and embankments.
In Sirajganj, the flood situation worsened further due to onrush of water and incessant downpour that inundated some new localities.
The Jamuna River was flowing 82cm above the danger level at Sirajganj point in the morning.
Ranajit Kumar, deputy assistant engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said the Jamuna started surging again, inundating the low-lying areas in Belkuchi, Shahjadpur, Chauhali, Kazipur and Sadar upazilas.
Road communications in these upazilas have apparently been snapped as most of the areas have gone under water.
