Arakan News Desk: Persistent fighting between the Arakan Army (AA) and the military junta continues to wreak havoc in northern Rakhine State and the southernmost part of Chin State, with clashes intensifying in Chin State’s Paletwa Township, according to reports from residents and the AA, as reported by The Irrawaddy.
In Paletwa Township, clashes have been ongoing since November 14, as the AA targets two junta tactical deployment posts in Tarunaing and Hnonebu villages.
The township has witnessed daily shelling from the bases, accompanied by daily bombings from junta jets, creating an environment of extreme tension.
At least four civilians have been killed, and eight more injured by the junta’s airstrikes and shelling since the clashes began. With transport routes closed, the prices of essential goods have surged, compounding the difficulties faced by the local population.
Residents report that the AA initiated an attack on the Kha Htee Hla outpost in Butheedaung Township on November 18, successfully capturing it by November 21.
The three-day battle resulted in heavy casualties for junta police and military troops, who fled to another outpost nearby.
During the fighting, the junta’s military launched airstrikes on Kha Htee Hla and five nearby villages, forcing thousands of residents to flee the area.
In response to the ongoing conflict, the AA vowed not to cease its attacks on junta bases until the troops inside surrender, accusing the junta of committing war crimes.
Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun, in a press conference, stated that regime troops are vigorously fighting back against the AA’s frequent attacks on the base in Tarunaing village. He accused the AA of undermining development in Rakhine State, emphasizing the strategic importance of Tarunaing as a major route connecting Myanmar and India.
Clashes also persisted in Pauktaw Town, where the AA intervened to save more than 100 residents who had been taken hostage on Tuesday. The AA facilitated the evacuation of other residents from the town, adding another layer of complexity to the multifaceted conflict.
As the violence escalates, concerns grow over the humanitarian impact on the civilian population, with calls for immediate measures to address the rising casualties and displacement.
