A five-member delegation of the ruling Awami League will leave for India today on a three-day visit at the invitation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
AL Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque will lead the delegation.
Other delegates are Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hassan Mahmud, Aroma Dutta, MP, AL Organising Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and AL Executive Committee Member Merina Jahan, MP.
During the visit, the delegation is scheduled to meet BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda and other senior leaders.
AL insiders say that this visit is considered very important ahead of the next national election in Bangladesh.
Since the AL’s assumption in office since 2009, India has been extending all-out support to the government.
As the next general election is only five months left, this visit and meetings with the Indian policymakers are very significant, they said.
The delegation may call on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The delegation will hold meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Security Council Advisor Ajit Doval.
Besides, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit India in September to join the G-20 summit at an invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Abdur Razzaque said that this is a courtesy visit at the invitation of the BJP.
“Several meetings with the government and political leaders will be held during the visit. Political issues are expected to be discussed at the meetings,” he said.
The BJP invited the AL leaders as part of its ‘Know BJP initiative’, announced by BJP President JP Nadda on the 43rd Foundation Day of the party for the external outreach of the ruling BJP.
The visit aims to enhance party-to-party interaction and enable the delegation to understand the vision and functioning of BJP, according to BJP sources.
