MD ABU TALHA SARKER, Dhaka: National cricket’s apex body Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has chalked out a year-long comprehensive plan for its new wing of the Bangladesh women’s Under-19 cricket team ahead of the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup (WC).
After so many cogitations and discussions with its full-member states, world cricket’s governing body the International Cricket Council (ICC) finally set a date to arrange the maiden edition of the WC for young girls in the light of the ICC Men’s Under-19 WC beside the ICC Cricket WC and the ICC Twenty20 WC of both men’s and women’s versions.
All concerned including the member states and the ICC itself unanimously elected Bangladesh as the host nation, who was scheduled to host its maiden edition of the extravaganza for the youth girls in December this year.
Initially, it was slated to take place in the beginning of the year 2021, but it was delayed for almost a year in view of the deadly coronavirus across the world.
In order to keep them busy, nurse properly and hone in their skills and techniques, the BCB had a plan of activities, under which they will bring them in cricket once again with a three-week-long workout module after over 10 months of protracted corona-enforced break.
The training is all set to begin at the picturesque Sylhet International Cricket Stadium from February 11 following the tests of the Covid-19 for the players and coaching staff along with the related-staff.
Regarding the matter of the Women’s Under19 cricket team, Tawhid Mahmood, in-charge of the Bangladesh Women’s Under-19 team said they are trying their best to arrange a couple of series for them at home and abroad to keep them busy prior to their mega event on home soil.
“We are trying our best to arrange a couple of series for the Women’s Under19 cricket team. It could be a home and away series either,” said Tawhid Mahmood.
“We are in final talks with a slew of countries, but we could not disclose it before finalising any of them,” Mahmood told The Independent.
“You know, there are a little bit of problems because of the concerns over Covid-19. All remain busy with the national teams. Many of them can’t want to be involved in games of the age-level cricket. But we are continuing our talks with other cricket boards to organise the series and tournament,” he added.
In addition, the BCB sorted out a slew of players at divisional level after a long trial for the last one and half-a-years with the help of the local coaches along with its appointed coaches following the squads of district level all over the country. Therefore, the BCB hosted a tournament from where they picked a pool of 45 cricketers for the preliminary squad. They had practice session in Cox’s Bazar before everything came to a grinding halt following the coronavirus.
