Mohammad Al Amin, Dhaka: After failing to forge any strong movement to force the government to resign for holding the upcoming general election under a caretaker administration, BNP is now reorganising its different units removing incompetent leaders for launching the ultimate phase of their agitation to foil the polls.
The opposition party has not announced any hartal and blockade programme for the current week as it is preparing to launch an intensified movement from 18 December to thwart the polls.
Talking to the Daily Sun, a few central and grassroots leaders of the party said they are taking preparations for a do-or-die movement to realise their demand.
BNP will overhaul different units across the country in the meantime so that they can make the movement a success, insiders said.
It has started taking organisational action against those leaders who are inactive or not playing their due role, they said.
They are being replaced with comparatively active leaders, the sources said, adding that the matter has been kept secret.
“A team of senior leaders is working with the issue,” a BNP Standing Committee member told the Daily Sun, wishing anonymity.
BNP sources said the party is reorganising its different units from grassroots to central and trying to revive the morale of the party men through holding virtual meetings.
Senior leaders have already held meetings with around 60 organisational districts.
The grassroots leaders and activists demanded that opportunist leaders, who failed to play their due role, be removed from their posts.
During investigation, the BNP team has found that some leaders from different units, front and associate organisations in the capital and outside brought out processions just for five minutes but sent photos of previous programmes to the central command.
The BNP is also taking organisational action against its leaders who are involved in the election process violating the party decision.
The party has expelled over 50 central and grassroots leaders, including some heavyweights, from 15 November till 8 December for participating in the election process. The party has boycotted the election and trying to foil it.
In the latest development, it removed Mirzapur municipality unit President Hazrat Ali Mia of Tangail district for playing no role in the ongoing movement and replaced him with unit Senior Vice-President Ali Azam Siddiqui.
At the same time, the grassroots activists blamed the leaders of the Dhaka city units of the BNP, its front and associate organisations for the overall failure to forge any effective movement.
They think the party failed in its previous movement due to the failure of the Dhaka city units.
The BNP and its allies observed 10 phases of nationwide blockade and three phases of hartal since 29 October to realise their demand but in vain.
BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan told the Daily Sun, “The government is using the state machinery against us while our party depends on people’s strength. But we hope people will get back their right through movement.”
In the meantime, the BNP will form a human chain in the capital and district towns tomorrow marking Human Rights Day and observe Martyred Intellectuals Day on 14 December and Victory Day on 16 December with various programmes.
At the same time, it is expecting fresh foreign pressure on the government to stop the election and meet their demand, said a central leader of the party, wishing not to be named.
“If any sanctions are imposed by the US, government will definitely become weak and can’t hold the election,” he added.
