A total of 292,000 containers were handled during the first month of 2022
BD News Desk: Chittagong Port has made a new record for container handling and goods transportation in January earlier this year.
A total of 292,000 containers were handled during the first month of 2022.
According to the data, an average of 268,000 TEUs containers was handled in the port every month in 2021.
The amount of gantry cranes, yard space and equipment has been increased at the port, said Omar Faruq, secretary of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA).
“As a result, productivity has shot up. With the opening of Patenga Container Terminal in future, the capacity of the port will also increase. Then the growth rate will increase further,” he added.
The record amount is a huge jump from July last year, when exports from Bangladesh were facing unexpected delays for the last couple of months owing to the global container crisis.
According to Chittagong port officials, this was partly brought on by the excess congestion in many Asian transshipment ports, especially Singapore, Port Klang in Malaysia, and Colombo in Sri Lanka.
As a result, the inland container depots (ICDs) in Bangladesh were failing to transfer the products to the ports due to the acute shortage of containers. This problem was amplified by delays in getting space on mother vessels in the transshipment ports, said port insiders.
