Two cases filed by police accuse around 1,200 unidentified people under the Explosives Act and of attacks on law enforcers
BSS: A Dhaka court on Thursday fixed June 7 for the submission of probe reports in two cases filed by the police over a clash between the traders of New Market and the students of Dhaka College.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Shuvra Chakrabarty issued the order after accepting the police report.
On Wednesday, police filed two cases under the Explosives Act and another over the attacks on the law enforcers.
SM Kaiyum, officer-in-charge of the New Market police station said that the cases were lodged against around 1,200 unidentified people.
Another case was filed by the uncle of Nahid Hossain, a delivery worker who succumbed to injuries at a hospital on Tuesday night, against 150-200 unknown people for the murder. Another injured worker died early on Thursday.
Two others seriously injured in the skirmishes – shop worker Mohammad Yasin, 18, and Dhaka Colege student Md Kakon Chowdhury, 20 – are currently receiving treatment at DMCH while another student named Mosharraf Hossain was admitted to Square Hospital with critical injuries.
Earlier on Monday night, a clash ensued between the students of Dhaka College and the New Market traders. The students demonstrated on Tuesday morning when the traders tried to open shops, resulting in fierce clashes till 10:30pm.
The shops of around 20 markets in the area remained closed on Wednesday. As the situation intensified, a high-level meeting was held between the teachers and students of Dhaka College and leaders of the New Market Traders Association on Wednesday night.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, officials of the Education Ministry and Bangladesh Shop Owners Association were present at the meeting held at Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) in the city’s Science Laboratory area.
