Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka is one of the costliest cities for expatriate employees, ranking well above many capital cities of Europe and the US, according to a survey by consultancy firm Mercer.
The annual report ranks 209 cities based on the comparative prices of 200 goods and services including housing, transportation, food and entertainment, with New York City used as a baseline comparison.
Dhaka ranked 98th costliest city for expatriate employees this year, dropping from 40 in the previous year’s ranking. Dhaka ranked 26th in 2020.
However, cities like Amsterdam, Dubai, Bangkok, Miami, Chicago, Rome, Boston, Washington, Munich, Brussels, Frankfurt, Oslo, Helsinki and many more European and American cities are cheaper for expatriate employees than Dhaka.
Also, Dhaka remains the most expensive city in South Asia, beating Mumbai (127th), New Delhi (155th), Chennai (177th) and Bengaluru (178th), Colombo (183rd), Karachi (223rd), and (224th) Islamabad, according to the list released on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong, Zurich and Geneva ranked as the top three costliest cities for expatriates, while Ankara closes the ranking at the 227th spot.
