The BNP has termed the activities of the six-member search committee, formed to select new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners (ECs), as mockery and said it will be worthless to put forward any name to the committee.
“It is sarcastic and nothing but a blatant joke as its main aim is to mislead the people. It is eyewash indeed,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference held at party’s Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
The malevolent attempts of the previous election commissions have been proved authentic in the national elections held in 2014 and 2018 and in many recent local body elections, Fakhrul said.
“BNP believes that the government’s harsher move over formation of the election commission is a part of its blueprint to hang on to power again,” the BNP leader said during the press conference.
He said his party also believes that no free, fair, credible and acceptable election is possible to be held under the management of the ruling Awami League.
Handing over power to a neutral election-time government and holding of the 12th parliamentary election under an imperial election commission is the only way to get rid of the prevailing political crisis, Fakhrul said.
Earlier, members of the party’s national standing committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, held a meeting at the office and discussed the country’s prevailing situation.
