Bangladesh News Desk: The third joint coordinating committee meeting of Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP) was held at Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters (DMP) on Monday.
The senior officers of the DMP and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took parts in the meeting chaired by Munibur Rahman, the project director and additional commissioner (traffic) of the metropolitan police unit.
In the meeting, the expert team of the DMP and JICA presented the progress of the DRSP so far achieved.
The DRSP trained the DMP officials to make them prepare for practical and participatory education programme (PPEP) to be arranged in schools on road safety.
It reviewed existing traffic accident data collection processes and systems.
The project recommended improving the system and data collection method using a software called Driver.
It proposed four pilot project concepts: Safer pedestrian crossing, safer boarding/alighting of bus passengers, capacity improvement of traffic police boxes and children’s traffic park.
Yasuhiro Suhara, director of Infrastructure Management Department at the JICA Headquarters, expressed his expectation that the project would contribute to safer traffic environment by implementing road safety experiences from the training in Japan.
In March 2022, the DMP with the help of JICA launched the DRSP to strengthen the capacity of police unit towards implementing comprehensive road safety programmes in Dhaka.
