Senior Staff Reporter: The state on Tuesday filed a leave to appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict that reinstated the quota system for government jobs.
In the appeal, the state sought the HC verdict be cancelled.
Earlier on June 5, the High Court declared illegal the gazette notification issued on October 4, 2018, that scrapped the freedom fighter quota in the first and second class government jobs.
In the verdict, the HC asked the respondents to reinstate the freedom fighter and other quotas for government jobs.
However, the court said the government can reform the quota if it needs or wants.
On October 4, 2018, the government issued a gazette notification abolishing the 10 per cent women, 30 per cent freedom fighter, and 10 per cent district quotas in public service.
