Freedom fighters mounted pressure on the Pakistan forces
UNB: On December 2, 1971, the struggle for liberation on Bangladesh soil was in full swing. Freedom fighters continued a winning streak, grabbing more and more new positions from the Pakistani occupation army.
Within 24 hours, saboteurs had destroyed the Rampura Power Supply Centre in Dhaka, five power substations in Chittagong, and two petrol pumps, according to several history books.
Furthermore, freedom fighters took control of the Azampur railway station near Akhauara in Brahmanbaria. Pakistani forces regrouped and attempted to retake the station, but the freedom fighters resolutely defended the counterattack from three directions until the invaders were forced to flee.
Liberation forces also attacked a Pakistan Army camp at Ghorashal in Narsingdi, killing 27 Pakistani militiamen and seizing a significant number of arms and ammunition to fuel the war for freedom.
Freedom fighters also captured Fatikchhari, Raozan and Dakkhin Anwara in Chittagong, and fought to the death to liberate Patiya.
In the Birishiri area of Netrokona, liberation forces killed five members of the Pakistani militia and arrested 21 armed Razakars during an ambush.
Meanwhile, in a party meeting of the Indian Congress at New Delhi, then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi spoke for the liberation war of Bangladesh.
She urged the Pakistani army to leave Bangladesh so that hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis could return home and live in peace.
Behind the scenes, India and Pakistan were both preparing to go to war with each other and this would become a reality very soon.
