NE NOW NEWS: The Gauhati High Court has asked the jail authorities of Assam to vaccinate the remaining inmates, who are lodged in various jails across the state, as a measure of protection from Covid19 as early as possible.
The directive was issued by a division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak.
The High Court bench took note of the vaccination details of 11,398 persons lodged in the jails in the state.
Out of the total jail inmates, only 7,524 have been administered Covid19 vaccines while 175 inmates have been fully vaccinated.
Nearly 4,000 jail inmates are yet to be vaccinated.
According to a media report, the Assam government assured the Gauhati High Court that the remaining jail inmates would be vaccinated for Covid19 within two weeks.
The High Court, which has revived a suo moto writ petition instituted last year regarding the Covid19 situation inside Assam’s jails, fixed July 28 as the next date of hearing.
The court registered a suo moto writ petition vide an order on July 23, 2020.
Earlier, the High Court sought the Assam government’s response regarding the number of inmates, who are lodged in various jails across the state and infected by Covid19.
The court also wanted to know about the measures taken by the jail authorities of Assam to deal the situation.
