BJP president Dilip Ghosh termed party worker Anup Kumar Roy’s death ‘cold-blooded murder’. The North Dinajpur district police in West Bengal claim Roy died of a brain hemorrhage.
Indrajit Kundu:The death of a 24-year-old political worker in West Bengal has triggered a slew of allegations against the state police. Arrested by police in North Dinajpur district on Wednesday, Anup Kumar Roy was reported dead on September 3.
While the police have asserted that Roy was taken into custody over his alleged links to local criminal gangs and fell ill, there is still little clarity about exactly what led to his death in custody at the Raiganj police station.
Describing Roy’s death as “cold-blooded murder”, the BJP questioned why a postmortem was conducted “hurriedly at night within three hours of his death”.
Accusing the West Bengal police of torturing Roy in custody, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh asked, “We cannot even imagine this kind of police atrocities. Where is the law and order heading?”
The BJP worker’s family has sought a second post-mortem.
“I have strong doubt that post-mortem has not been done lawfully and we are not ready to accept the illegally prepared PM report,” Gita Roy, mother of the deceased wrote in a letter to the police.
North Dinajpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Sumit Kumar said the deceased had been summoned to the police station for questioning in connection with a robbery case in which four persons were nabbed.
“He suddenly fell unconscious. We immediately rushed him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Since SOP requires an immediate post-mortem to be carried out, a post-mortem clearly reveals he died of a brain hemorrhage,” Kumar told media persons.
The incident comes just weeks after BJP MLA from Hemtabad, Debendranath Roy was found hanging in front of a closed shop at Balia More, around 2 km away from his house on July 13. While police have termed it a case of suicide, Bengal BJP has alleged foul play, demanding a CBI probe in the case.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, crude bombs were hurled near the residence of Barrackpore BJP MP Arjun Singh on the day an FIR was lodged against him over a social media post where he was seen giving a communal twist to an incident in Murshidabad.
