The award honours the courageous frontline news gatherers
Bangladesh News Desk: Four photojournalists have won the Bangladesh Press Photo Award, which honours and celebrates the courageous men and women who are frontline warriors in gatherings news.
The event, organized for the first time by Drik Picture Library Ltd, was held on Thursday, according to a press release.
A photo by Amran Hossain of The Daily Star won the “Photo of the Year” award. He was also awarded Tk1 lakh.
Sourave Lasker of New Age won in the Arts, Culture and Sports category; Jibon Ahmed of Daily Manab Zamin won in Public Interest Journalism category; and Md Zakirul Mazed of Weekly Citizen won in Politics category. Each of these three winners also received a Tk50,000 award.
Apart from the money, all four of them also received a crest, certificate, and a yearbook copy.
The organizers plan to hold an exhibition in Dhaka this month with 30 selected photos, including the winning submissions. A virtual version will also be hosted to attain a wider reach.
A total of 289 contestants had participated in the contest with 1,402 photos submitted in different categories.
The judges of this competition, which highlighted the quality of their work by identifying the best photojournalism and documentary photography produced over the last year, were five eminent photographers who are well known and admired in the domestic and foreign arenas.
They are Syed Zakir Hossain, chief photographer of Dhaka Tribune; Shahidul Alam, photographer, activist and curator of Drik; Abir Abdullah, photographer and editor of Educator; Sana Ullah, photographer, editor and mentor of National Geographic Society; and Shafiqul Alam, bureau chief, AFP.
