Hemanta Kumar Nath: As a large part of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park remains submerged in flood water, many animals including one-horned rhino, deer, elephant, are fleeing from the park to seek refuge in safer places in the nearby areas. This has made it easier for the poachers to locate and kill the wild animals for meat and body parts.
Hunters are trying to poach wild animals who are moving out of the park even as police and the state forest department are engaged in providing security to them.
According to reports, based on intelligence input, police and forest officials had conducted an operation in Behali area of Biswanath district and arrested two persons for killing a hog deer.
The police and forest department team arrested the persons — identified as Akomanlora Bora and Biswajit Baruah — while they were cooking the hog deer meat at a farmhouse located in Dalani area.
A police officer said that the hunters killed the hog deer in Rangsali area and were selling its meat.
“Based on intelligence input, we had launched an operation in Dalani and arrested two persons while they were cooking the meat of the deer at a farmhouse,” a police officer said.
According to the Kaziranga National Park authority, 35 wild animals including 30 hog deer died due to the current flood situation in the park.
The flood waters are gradually receding, but 65 per cent area in the park is still underwater.
The park authority said that 32 camps inside the park are still underwater and the flood forced the park authority to vacate three camps.
