After months of long-distance attacks, President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden met face to face in Cleveland for the first presidential debate. It was not exactly a debate. Shouting, interruptions and often incoherent cross talk filled the air and the Moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News struggled to maintain control as he peppered the candidates with questions about the Supreme Court, the economy, the corona virus pandemic and more. The moderator was struggling to maintain control of the 90-minute. He repeatedly admonished the president for speaking over Biden and disregarding the rules both sides had agreed to.
The first presidential debate between President Trump and Joe Biden featured a chaotic series of bitter exchanges and name-calling, with the president repeatedly speaking over his Democratic rival. “Will you shut up, man?”, It’s hard to get any word in with this clown,” an exasperated Biden said in a comment that was emblematic of the tumultuous nature of the debate, which was held in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a sudden end to a chaotic evening that can hardly be called a debate in any traditional sense of the word. These events rarely swing an election one way or another and this one was such a muddled mess.
The event has also prompted a huge reaction from world audiences who tuned in for the chaotic event. Newspapers and commentators around the world have criticized the tone and tactics of the debate. As The Times in the UK wrote, “The clearest loser from the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was America.”
Who won the debate? We don’t know but definitely American people lost for the first time in history, America saw this kind of immature presidential debate. The loser was really us, the American people. A lot of people were expecting this to go the way that it did.
However, it was expected to be chaotic, and it was chaotic. To me nobody won the debate. I really understand that Trump is not a very seasoned politician. He was at his best when he was talking about his policies, what he’s done and what he’s going to do. Trump controlled the message with more interrupting, talking and controlling. Biden withstood it better than I thought he would. I thought Biden had a good few periods where he aimed his message directly at the camera and to the public. But there were other times Biden would say something and he’d try to debunk it.
Lastly, as a Bangladeshi American as an Immigration Consultant I always consider the importance of supporting immigrants to take that next step to be part of the American dream. Immigration is the fuel for a country like the United States to keep progressing. The skills, the ideas and the “cultural power” that immigrants have always brought this nation made America a great nation. Unlike past immigrants, many foreigners living in the United States today are present without authorization. According to estimates, roughly one-third of these individuals are undocumented, and although Hispanics and Asians now account for around 20% of the total population, they make up nearly a third of all births. Thus, the future of the United States is very much tied to the status and welfare of immigrants and their children. Immigrants and their children are not born with more creative talents than native-born citizens, but their selectivity and marginality may have pushed and pulled those with ability into high-risk career paths that reward creative work.
Whoever won the election should work on Comprehensive Immigration Reform to protect illegal immigrants so they can keep their families together at a time. Hopefully both Trump and Biden will point this issue in their upcoming debate event.
