Clear skies over the past three days have brought some relief to the people of Assam and also reduced the water level of all major rivers in the state. However, nearly 10.75 lakh people of 1,412 villages in 18 districts are still affected by Assam floods.
Hemanta Kumar Nath: The flood situation in Assam is gradually improving as the water level of all major rivers is decreasing. But over 10.75 lakh people of 18 districts are still affected due to the current floods.
Clear skies over the past three days have brought some relief to the people of Assam and also reduced the water level of all major rivers in the state.
However, two people drowned in floodwaters in Morigaon and Tinsukia district on Friday, taking the death toll to 37.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person drowned in floodwaters at Mayong area in Morigaon district while another person drowned at Doomdooma area in Tinsukia district.
On the other hand, nearly 10.75 lakh people of 1412 villages in 18 districts Dhemaji, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district are still affected due to the second wave of the flood.
Out of the total affected people, over 6.32 lakh people have been affected in the Barpeta district alone followed by 1.95 lakh people in South Salmara, 84,000 people in Goalpara, 37,700 people in Dhubri and 35,000 people in Morigaon district.
The ASDMA report said that around 53,348 hectares of cropland is still submerged under floodwaters.
A total of 6,531 people have taken shelter at 171 relief camps set up by the administration in eight districts in Assam.
On Friday, the district administration had rescued 1,046 persons from the flood-affected areas of Barpeta, Dhubri and South Salmara districts.
On the other hand, the floodwaters are also receding in Kaziranga National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Orang National Park, Manas National park.
