NE NOW NEWS: The Assam government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the clashes that broke out in Assam’s Sipajhar on Thursday during an eviction drive.
At least three persons died after police opened fire to control an agitated crowd of protestors.
However, according to government data, two persons have lost their lives in the firing.
On the other hand, nine police personnel also sustained injuries during the clashes.
The judicial probe will be conducted under the chairmanship of a retired judge of the Gauhati High Court.
“The Government in the Home & Political Departments have decided to institute an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of 02 (two) civilians and injury of several others including police personnel in the firing incident that took place at Dhalpur area in Sipajhar Revenue Circle under Darrang District on 23/09/21,” an order issued by the Assam government said.
On Thursday morning, when officials of the Darrang district administration supported by a huge contingent of armed security personnel reached Siajhar-Dholpur area to carry out an eviction drive, the locals protested.
The protest soon turned ugly, as demonstrators attacked policemen and other district administration officials with sticks and other sharp weapons.
With situation going out of hands, the police resorted to lathi-charge. However, with situation still not in control and being attacked, the police resorted to opening fire, resulting in death of three persons.
Assam is on ‘state-sponsored fire’, says Congress’ Rahul Gandhi
Just hours after the violent clash that broke out in Assam’s Sipajhar during an eviction drive on Thursday, top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the BJP-led government in Assam, accusing it of sponsoring violence.
“Assam is on state-sponsored fire. I stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the state- no children of India deserve this,” Rahul Gandhi said.
Assam Congress MP and deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi also condemned the incident.
“I have strongly condemned the act of police firing on protesters of Dholpur, Sipajhar during an inhuman eviction drive by the BJP government. This government lacks sensitivity towards the poor and landless and display a brutish and fascist mindset,” Gaurav Gogoi said.
