On Friday, the TMC high command announced the names of newly-appointed state and district presidents of the Trinamool Youth Congress Committee (TMYCC).
Manogya Loiwal: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has initiated a major reshuffle within the party in the run-up to the 2021 Assembly elections. Banerjee has released a list of fresh faces days after she addressed TMC’s first indoor virtual rally on July 21.
On Friday, the TMC high command announced the names of newly-appointed state and district presidents of the Trinamool Youth Congress Committee (TMYCC). CM’s nephew and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee will continue as president of all-India TMYCC while actor Soham Chakraborty apart from Santanu Banerjee, Debnath Hansda, Suprakash Giri and Arpan Saha have been appointed as vice presidents of the party’s youth wing.
Abhishek Banerjee who represents Diamond Harbour constituency took to Twitter and said, “I am pleased to announce the constitution of new TMYC State Committee & the appointment of new District Youth Presidents. Best wishes to the new members & hope we serve the people of #Bengal to the best of our abilities.”
This major reshuffling comes less than 48 hours after Mamata Banerjee issued a call for revenge in the 2021 Assembly polls. While addressing the rally on July 21, she had said, “We will take revenge from the BJP in the 2021 polls. If we could oust CPI(M) from its 35 years of rule, then BJP is just a petty party. Nothing else. Keep faith on the TMC. I have fought all my life to reach this position. I am not afraid to fight.”
Areas once considered bastions of the TMC were lost to the BJP in 2019, a slippery slope CM Mamata Banerjee’s party is working to regain.
However, a lot of groundwork and feedback has reportedly gone into TMC’s poll preparedness. Political operator Prashant Kishor’s involvement with TMC’s campaign seems to be showing results, one of which is the recent reshuffle. It is also worth noting that even brothers or kin of sitting ministers have not been spared from the reshuffle.
Prashant Kishor and his massive I-PAC team are currently working overtime from Kolkata ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections.
Swarup Biswas, brother of West Bengal sports minister Aroop Biswas and relatives of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim also lost their posts as a result of this rejig. Interestingly, a series of surveys and online feedbacks apparently played a major role in Minister Arup Roy’s replacement as Howrah district president. The post has now been allotted to junior minister Laxmi Ratan Shukla.
A senior leader from southern Bengal said, “This is the first step to the next election. It reflects the new face and new roles of party leadership. It is true that old is gold but this time the scorecard by new professionals is reflecting differently.”
