Community News Desk: Consul General of Bangladesh in New York, Mohammad Monirul Islam met with Edward Marmelstein, Commissioner for International Affairs at the New York City Mayor’s Office.
During the meeting, various issues related to the friendly relations between Bangladesh and the United States were discussed.
The talks focused on the welfare, security of the Bangladesh community and education and cultural cooperation, including the erection of the Shaheed Minar at a suitable location in New York. The Consul General also drew the Commissioner’s attention to the widespread use and expansion of the Bengali language in New York.
Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the United States, the Consul General hoped that the existing areas of cooperation between the two countries would be further strengthened and expanded in the future.
During the discussion, both expressed interest in taking initiative to establish institutional cooperation (sister city) between New York City and one of the metropolitan cities of Bangladesh. In order to further develop the culture of Bangladesh in New York, it was suggested that film festivals, food festivals and exhibitions on Bangladesh could be organized.
During the discussion, he briefed Commissioner Edward Marmel Stein on the socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the leadership of the Prime Minister. During the meeting, he spoke about the investment-friendly policies and initiatives of the Government of Bangladesh and the areas in which there is immense potential for investment.
Mentioning the involvement and active participation of the Bangladesh community in the social and cultural arena of New York, the Commissioner appreciated the various initiatives and activities taken by the Bangladesh community in the development of the city. The Commissioner expressed his interest to work more closely with the Consulate in the coming days for the welfare of the community.
He expressed hope that the ongoing cooperation between the Mayor’s Office and the Bangladesh Consulate General would be further strengthened and deepened. Counselor of the Consulate General Ayesha Haque was present during the meeting.
