Ankur Bhattacharya, Kolkata: The total number of casualties due to Covid-19 pandemic in West Bengal which crossed the 5,000 mark yesterday,reached to a record figure of 5070 this evening following the deaths of another 53 people during the last 24 hours in different hospitals, posing a grim picture of the overall situation.
At the same time another record number of 3,310 people tested Covid-19 positive in the state causing concern for all for its unabated rapid growth.
Informing this the latest Medical Bulletin issued by the state Health department here tonight said in the wake of an unabated surge in the number of infected people in one day, like a record number of 3,310 people today, the absolute number of those affected by Corona virus in Bengal crossed a record 2.63 lakhs today to touch the figure of 2,63,634, up from 2,60,324 yesterday
Among today’s 53 new casualties,20 were the residents of Kolkata and 21 belonged to North 24 Parganas and Howrah, while the rest were from other districts of South and North Bengal,the Bulletin said.
Of the record number of 3,310 fresh Covid cases in one day in the state, the maximum 2289 were from Kolkata alone, followed by those from other districts,the bulletin said.
Meanwhile,the total number of Active and serious Corona cases in different hospitals after several days of downward trend, once again increased by 313 today,up from 220 yesterday, to take their total number to exactly 26,865 from 26,552 barely 24 hours ago.
In this present grim situation the only positive indication was the rapid increase in the number of daily Covid-19 tests in the state. But after a few days of ups and down, it has once again settled in the range of 43,000 per day today for sometime from around as high as 47,000 at one point of time. With the daily tests reaching the figure of 43,282 tonight, down from 43,854 yesterday, the total number of tests now touched the astounding figure of over 3.3 million to 33,14,598 tonight from 32,71,316 yesterday, the Bulletin said
Similarly the rate of recovery of Covid-19 patients in West Bengal during the day also barely increased to 87.89 per cent by tonight from 87.87 per cent yesterday, compared to the national average of around 86 per cent.
Altogether 2,944 people were discharged from different hospitals and safely returned home today, the Bulletin said adding so far altogether 2,31,699 people, up from 2,28,755 people yesterday, were able to return home after recovery.
