Community News Desk: The High Commission of Bangladesh in Brunei Darussalam on Friday hosted an event, commemorating the birth anniversaries of the Nobel Laureate Poet Rabindranath Tagore and the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
High Commissioner Nahida Rahman Shumona collaborated with two local schools: St Andrews School and Dato Othman School, the Reading and Literacy Association and the Language Bureau of Brunei.
Around 36 children from the schools along with the principals attended the programme.
The Director for Administration and Management of Language Bureau was present in the programme as the guest of honour. The event started with recitation of Surah Fatiha.
In her welcome speech, Nahida Rahman Shumona said known as the “Poet of the World,” Rabindranath Tagore was a multi-talented genius who excelled in poetry, music, drama, and painting.
His collection “Gitanjali” earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Kazi Nazrul Islam, known as the “Rebel Poet,” played a vital role in shaping the cultural and political identity of Bangladesh.
Later, Dr Malai Zeity Abdul Hamid introduced the little performers of St Andrews School; five children from grade 4 recited selected stanzas from the Gitanjali. The children recited the poems in a heartwarming manner. Following that local youth, Shanned Tsen Jia Ee, award winning violinist played “Purano she diner kotha”.
The High Commission also screened video of Tagore’s “Amra shobai Raja” and Nazrul’s “Shukno patar nupur paye” with English subtitles.
Mizan Mehdi, a veteran Bangladeshi in Bandar and a singer rendered a Tagore song and a Nazrul Song. The Guest of Honor Hajah Anisa Moksin recited Shonar Tori in English. The audience was highly appreciative and requested to be invited again.
The School children were given a tour of the High Commission and a short reading by the High Commissioner from the Graphic Novel Mujib at the Bangabandhu Corner of the High Commission. The High Commissioner thanked all and ended the programme.
