UNB: As Aus paddy cultivation is gaining popularity in Rangpur region, the record 63,690 hectares of land has been brought under Aus paddy production in the current 2020-21 season.
This is the highest in the last 20 years, said a press release of Agriculture Ministry on Friday.
This time the land brought under cultivation is 4,015 hectares more than the target of 59,675 hectares, according to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
In the 2000-01 season, Aus was planted in this area on 25,634 hectares of land, in the following years, the area under Aus cultivation continued to decrease and in 2009-10, Aus was planted on lowest 12,938 hectares of land.
Besides, the average yield per hectare has increased along with the increase in the area under aus cultivation.
In the 2017-18 season, the production of rice per hectare was 2.98 MT. In the last 2018-19 season it has increased to 3.04 MT per hectare.
If 3.07 MT of rice is produced per hectare this year as per the production target, over 1,95,000 MT of rice will be produced from 5 districts of Rangpur region in the current season, which is over 12000 MT more than the total production target, predicted the DAE.
