John Wilbert and Saurabh Singh, Port Blair: Even after several years of its inception, the District Hospital of the Mayabunder region, R P Hospital still doesn’t have a sufficient number of specialist doctors like Gynaecologists, Paediatricians and Ophthalmologists.
Due to this issue, the residents of the Mayabunder region complained that when patients from remote areas visit R P Hospital Mayabunder with eye related or children related problems, they face immense difficulties as there are no specialist doctors related to their problems.
Most of the time, several patients who need urgent care have to travel to Port Blair for further treatment, which is not only troublesome but also expensive for people of the region.
Talking to the reporters, Mr. Abdul Siddique, Former Pramukh, Mayabunder said that the condition is so pitiable that instead of District Hospital Mayabunder and Gynaecologist has been posted in CHC Diglipur and often patients from District Hospital Mayabunder is referred to the CHC Diglipur.
Earlier also we had raised this demand and some specialists were posted but again they were called back without any reason that too all of a sudden.
“If the Health Department can’t post specialists at Mayabunderatleast specialist should visit Mayabunder on weekly basis,” he added.
When Andaman Sheekha Daily contacted a senior official of Directorate of Health Services, the official said that these problems have come up due to shortage of specialist doctors in the Health Services.
The official assured that they have already notified the matter to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and new appointments of the Ophthalmologists and Paediatricians have already started.
“As soon as there is a new appointment of required specialist doctors, the Gynaecologists, Paediatricians and Ophthalmologist will be sent immediately to areas like Mayabunder”, the official added.
