Another talented terminated teacher of Tripura committed suicide on Saturday evening at Khowai.
The deceased woman teacher has been identified as Rini Debbarma.
She was a gold medalist from Tripura University in education and was serving as a teacher at Ampura Higher Secondary School before her termination.
Dalia Das, the leader of the Joint Movement Committee, which has been continuing protest against the termination of the teachers said, “Rini Debbarma consumed poison along with her one-year-old son.”
They were rushed to the Khowai district hospital from where both the mother and son were shifted to ILS hospital at Agartala.
However, Rini Debbarma died on the way to ILS hospital.
The condition of the child, who has been admitted to the ICU, is stated to be critical.
Rini Debbarma was a resident of Nakhatra Bari area of Ampura under Khowai district.
Her husband, Dinesh Debbarma, is also a terminated teacher.
Dalia Das said, “The lady teacher consumed poison with her son due to extreme poverty in the family.”
From 2010-2014, the then Left Front government recruited 10,323 teachers.
Later, all these teachers were sacked on the basis of a directive issued by the Supreme Court stating that the recruitment policy was not done as per set rules.
Before the last Assembly elections, the BJP had promised the terminated teachers to engage them again by bringing amendment to the law.
All the 10,323 teachers were terminated with effect from March 31 last year.
The terminated teachers have continued to protest under the banner of Joint Movement Committee demanding their jobs back since December 7 last year.
