About 326 pirates operating in the Sundarbans surrendered their weapons and ammunition to Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from 2016 to 2018. The government will now provide them with houses and cattle as they have returned to normal life.
The government has declared Sundarbans as pirate free for reducing crime and tiger poaching in the vast mangrove forest.
RAB said 326 pirates operating in the forested delta region surrendered their weapons and ammunition in exchange for cash, legal aid and mobile phones since the programme began. Now the government will give them 102 houses, 90 shops, 12 boats, 8 trawlers and 88 cattle.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will hand over those at a programme in front of Rampal Upazila Parishad Chattar today (Monday).
