Bangladesh News Desk: Some 40,000 people in four unions of Roumari upazila under Kurigam district have been marooned due to flash flood caused by heavy rains and onrush of hilly water.
The flood situation in Roumari upazila has remained unchanged due to continuous rains and onrush of hilly water. Normal life is being disrupted as flood water has entered houses. Although many families are facing food crisis, the upazila administration could not start relief distribution.
Rivers flowing in the areas have continued to swell and inducted four unions of the upazila. The lack of food and drinking water is adding to the misery of the people of flood-hit areas.
According to sources in upazila agriculture office, 223 hectares of croplands have gone under water, and many outstanding crops have been damaged.
LGED Engineer Jubayet Hossain said 22 kilometres of carpeted roads and 35 kilometres of muddy roads have gone under flood water, disconnecting the upazila’s communications with district headquarters. People are using boats to move from one place to another amid knee-to-waist deep water.
Roumari UNO Ashraful Alam Rusel said the low-lying areas of the upazila have been inundated due to heavy rains and on rush of hilly water. About 40000 people have been marooned and we are taking preparations to provide relief materials to the flood victims.
