Tomorrow (July 1) is the sixth anniversary of the horrendous attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan of the capital.
On this day in 2016, five militants equipped with firearms, bombs and machetes stormed the bakery and held everyone inside the posh restaurant hostage.
During the incident, two police officers were shot dead by the assailants. The militants also killed 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners.
An operation named ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ killed five terrorists the next day. Two bakery staff also died.
On November 27, 2019, a Dhaka court delivered the verdict in the case, sentencing seven Neo-JMB militants, including the mastermind of the attack, to death.
Additional Commissioner (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Asaduzzaman said that that the militants have no ability to carry out any attack as law enforcement agencies, including CTTC, have destroyed the militant network across the country by conducting repeated raids.
He said that as they have no power to carry out attack, they are trying to campaign on social media.
