Country’s noted lawyers today hailed the cabinet’s approval of the draft of “The Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance- 2020” prescribing death as the capital punishment for rape, and said it would have a positive impact in the society.
”Death penalty (for rape) will undoubtedly have a positive impact across the country. But the authorities concerned should remain alert so that none can use the law intentionally to harass anyone,” senior lawyer of the Supreme Court Dr Kazi Akter Hamid told BSS in his reaction after approval of the draft of the law.
There would have a tendency of filing false cases using the law, he said, adding that the authorities should check it properly so that none can be victimized.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) President Advocate Manzil Murshid said enhancing capital punishment for rape from life imprisonment to death will play a positive role in changing the people’s mentality.
He added: to ensure justice, the concerned officials should be given opportunity to work independently.
Another noted lawyer, JR Khan Rabin said the government’s initiative of amending the existing law to control and prevent crimes and ensure justice for victims is appreciable.
The criminals must always be treated as the offenders, not in any other way, he said, adding that environment should be created so that administrations and law enforcement agencies and other concerned can work independently to ensure the justice.
