Regarding the electoral system, human rights and democratic situation in Bangladesh, German Ambassador to Bangladesh Achim Tröster has ‘misquoted’ the statement of the BNP, claimed party’s secretary general MirzaFakhrul Islam.
He made the claim while talking to reporters after paying homage at the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman at Chandrima Udyan in the capital on Thursday.
On March 17, the German ambassador paid a courtesy call to BNP leaders. After the meeting, a BNP leader quoted the ambassador as saying the envoy expressed concern over elections, human rights and the democratic situation in the country.
Meanwhile, the German ambassador disowned such statement and expressed dissatisfaction claiming that no such discussion took place with the BNP.
Organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association Bangladesh (DCAB) on Wednesday found the German ambassador as its guest. A journalist asked the diplomat as to why he is unhappy with any of the BNP’s comments.
In reply, Tröster said, “I have been quoted as saying that I am concerned about the human rights and democratic situation in Bangladesh. This is not true. The BNP has ‘misquoted’ me.”
In this regard, Mirza Fakhrul told reporters that the words of German Ambassador Achin Tröster were not correct because the person who spoke in our party did not quote him (Tröster). Rather, he (the ambassador) ‘misquoted’ the statement of the BNP.
