The market capitalisation fell by over Tk 3,000 crore at the end of last week amid the regulator’s effort to prevent a freefall in the market.
On Wednesday, Bangladesh Stock Exchange Securities Commission lowered the circuit breaker limit at 2 percent as the DSE’s main index had dropped 492 points in just eight working days. It also decided to invest Tk 100 crore from the Capital Market Stabilisation Fund (CMSF).
Following the moves, DSEX jumped 155 points on Wednesday, which was the highest single-day rise since January 3, last year.
On that day, the BSEC held another meeting with the chief financial officers of various banks and decided that the banks would increase their investments in the stock market.
Despite this, the country’s stock market did not survive the fall last week. The market capitalisation of the main stock market, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) has decreased by Tk 3,321 crore or 0.62 percent to Tk 5,35,106 crore.
With this, the DSE has lost market capital of Tk 31,000 crore in four consecutive weeks of decline.
The DSE’s benchmark index, the DSEX, declined by 28.37 points, or 0.42 percent, to 6,668 during the week.
Among other DSE indices, the Shariah-based DSES Index decreased by 6.59 points or 0.46 percent, and the blue-chip DS-30 Index down by 37.84 points or 1.54 percent.
However, the total turnover has increased in the last week. The DSE had a turnover of Tk 3,972.14 crore last week, which is Tk 226.31 crore or 6.04 percent more than the previous week.
Last week, the average turnover on the DSE was Tk 794.42 crore per working day, which is 45.26 crore or 6.04 percent more than the previous week.
A total of 386 companies participated in the share and unit transactions on the DSE last week. Among the companies, the share price increased by 207, decreased by 156 and remained unchanged by 23.
Beximco Limited’s shares were the most traded on the DSE last week. During the week, the company’s share turnover was Tk 262.41 crore, which is 6.61 percent of the total turnover.
Shares of Fortune Shoes came in second place with a turnover of Tk 164.34 crore and Bangladesh Shipping Corporation came in the third position with a turnover of Tk 133.93 crore.
Also on the list of top ten companies were BATBC, Orion Pharmaceuticals, Sonali Paper, BD Com, Dragon Sweater, LafargeHolcim Cement and Union Bank.
Meanwhile, on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the overall index CASPI decreased by 11 points or 0.05 percent to 19,561 during the week and Tk 112.97 crore worth of stocks were traded.
However, the total transaction amount increased slightly in the week and the primary index witnessed a 14-month rise on Wednesday.
