Bangladesh News Desk: Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called upon the authorities concerned to remove the smokescreen created over the termination of Sharif Uddin, deputy assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Mass media reported that ACC official Sharif Uddin has been terminated and a negative impression has creased in and outside of the organisation, TIB said. It is unprecedented that a group of ACC officials formed a human chain in front of its headquarters in Dhaka protesting the termination, it said. It is unprecedented and alarming, said the TIB.
TIB, also an anti-corruption watchdog, in a statement floated for the media Thursday evening, said Sharif played a vital role against corruption in land acquisition in Cox’s Bazar, issuing NID cards and passports among Rohingya and unveiled a financial scam in Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company.
He also played his skilled legal role without fear of corruption when he was stationed at the ACC’s Cox’s Bazar office, it said.
“Has he been victimised by the vengeance of a powerful syndicate? Has he been transferred to Patuakhali from Chattogram in face of pressure from the syndicate and at last been terminated? Such questions are naturally arising in the country,” it said.
TIB said the ACC can possess authority to sack any of its staff or officials but why has the organisation chosen the path of terminating Sharif, a skilled and braved official, without giving him protection?
People have the right to know the facts behind the termination from the ACC, TIB said in the statement calling upon the ACC to make its stance clear before the countrymen.
If the ACC fails to reply to the point, the credibility of the anti-corruption body will face a deep crisis.
Alongside, the honest and braved officials will lose their courage in fighting against corruption while the commission will make its institutional strength weak which in no way can be desirable, it said.
TIB believes that a good sense will prevail upon the ACC officials and they would remove the smokescreen created over the termination, the statement read.
