Total cases 63,026; death toll jumps to 846
UNB:The health authorities in Bangladesh on Saturday confirmed the detection of 2,635 new coronavirus patients in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 63,026 .
Besides, the death toll rose to 846 as 35 more people died from the virus infection in the country during the same period.
Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) came up with the disclosure at a regular online briefing.
In the last 24 hours, 50 coronavirus testing laboratories across the country tested 12,486 samples, she added.
Bangladesh announced its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18 but it has been seeing a sharp rise in both new cases and deaths in recent weeks.
In May, 452 deaths and 39,386 cases were recorded. In March, 51 people were infected and six others died. In April, 160 people died while 7,616 confirmed cases were reported.
Global situation
The global confirmed coronavirus cases have exceeded 6.7 million globally, with over 394,787 fatalities, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.
Besides, more than 2.9 million recoveries have been recorded.
The U.S. now has now confirmed 1,897,239 cases and the death toll reached 109,127.
The UK has become the second country to cross the 40,000 mark of coronavirus fatalities while Brazil’s coronavirus death toll has reached 34,021 as the third-highest in the world after the U.S. and the UK.
Meanwhile, in terms of confirmed coronavirus cases, Brazil is now in second position with 614,941 confirmed cases followed by Russia (449,256), United Kingdom (284,734) and Spain (240,978) and India (236,184).
The World Health Organization advised governments around the world on Friday to encourage people to wear masks in regions where physical distancing is difficult.
